Introduction to Artistic Strategies

Semester: WS 18/19
Lecturers: Univ.-Lekt. Leopold Schatzl & Univ.-Lekt. Priv.-Doz. Dr.phil. Katharina Gsöllpointner

In this class we dealt with basic theoretical and methodical prerequisites of artistic strategies in the aesthetic and the research field. This included the confrontation with differences and similarities between art, science and humanities, as well as with selected examples of artistic and cross-disciplinary work. Further, we put a strong emphasis on the examination of research media and therefore went to Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Weltmuseum Wien, OK Offenes Kulturhaus and Ars Electronica Center. This class was divided into two different tasks focusing on the topic migration and movement.

Class with Leo Schatzl
The task was to make a public art project –  migrating from one space to another, a mask, making yourself visible or invisible, to survive in another environment. The presentation included the design of a poster.

Individual Project
Format: Poster
Topic: At that time I was thinking about cross cultural adaption, humanitarian challenges and symbolism – specifically the survival journey of thousands of people from areas where war was taking place. Therefore I researched origin, definition and similarities of space blankets(1) and strait jackets(2).

Class with Katharina Gsöllpointer
In this part of the class we concerned ourselves with A Cyborg Manifesto: Science, Technology, and Socialist Feminism In The Late Twentieth Century by Donna Haraway. We worked with the concept of space, (body) involvement and adaption and focused on the question of how to interact with our surrounding while presenting our reflections as a group on the written.
